What is spirulina algae?Spirulina is a blue-green microalgae. Its botanical name is Arthrospira platensis and it is considered "green" because it contains chlorophyll and "blue" because it contains phycocyanin. Spirulina comes in tiny microscopic filaments and its name comes from the Latin "Spiral". Spirulina has been present on earth for over 3 billion years: blue-green algae are thought to have created our atmosphere, allowing life to evolve.
